This columnr congratulates the ‘96 Foundation of the late Ex- Vice-Mayor and Mrs. Isabelo Ferrera for holding its family reunion last Holy Week. Certainly, many of the townspeople benefited from its medical mission and handog higugma. You could just imagine the generosity of the Ferrera Family. Aside from free consultation and treatment during the medical mission and the operation tuli, the medicines were likewise given free. It is hoped that the shining example of the foundation be followed by other outstanding families of Banton.

The District of Banton, particularly the Tumalum-Lagang Elementary School, deserves praises for topping the list of status of schools as per 1998 NEAT result that got 100% passing (75% and above) with the District of Concepcion as second. Also, Banton ranked first in all the districts in the Division of Romblon per percentage of pupils who obtained 75% and above in the 1998 NEAT.

This column thanks the BHS Class 1989 for sponsoring the lenten basketball tournament. Participated in by 15 teams, the management took hard time scheduling the games. It is hoped in next year’s tourney that the Municipal Sports Council shall function to assist the sponsor.

The results of the sportsfest were: St. Catherine of Balogo - champion; St. Guadalupe of Sibay - first runner-up; and Hunters of Tan-ag, second runner-up.

Orchids to Mr. Dennis Martinquilia for having successfully hurdled the licensure examination given by the Professional Regulation Commissions Board for Deck Officers as second mate in Manila last April. Mr. Martinquilla was an active leader during his student days at the Banton National High School. May his tribe increase rapidly.

Anti-smoking in public places will soon become a law. Presently, the measure is being debated in the halls of Congress. Truly, smoking is pernicious to our health. Let us heed the government’s warning, Smoking causes cancer. Let us avoid it. It is dangerous. That is it.
